Your body isn’t DYING, it’s trying to LIVE…

Your body is growing and changing ever day, it is trying to LIVE, support you and carry you through this life….We burst into this world with unlimited potential, massive growth ahead of us and the ability to grow, experience, live, laugh and love for more than a century. (it has been done… have a click here: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/oldest-person ). Our bodies are CREATED TO LAST but so many people deteriorate too soon. Why is that?

All of us know someone who has “rusted out”, obtained a condition like a Heart Attack, Stroke, Diabetes, Colitis, Arthritis, Cancer or even worse degenerated so much as to need an organ removal or an operation to fix themselves. These major malfunctions are the result of your body trying to LIVE…. not DIE.

When we are filled with toxins, mal nourished or damaged, our bodies speak to us, telling us how it is feeling and what it needs. It is only when we ignore of these signals that our Organs shut down and don’t work. It happens because our bodies have been fighting for a long time to LIVE and need a rest. Your Kidneys, Liver, Colon, Skin, Lungs, Heart, Brain, Lymphatic System, Spleen, Glandular System, Veins, Arteries, Circulatory System, Emotions, all of the connective tissues, muscles, nerves and bones work together every milli-second of the day for one purpose… TO LIVE and move YOU around for YOU to experience life to its FULLEST.

SURVIVAL of THE FITTEST.. connecting to Natures HIPPO dot…

Inside of you there is a beautiful balancing-act happening. There are 1 billion adjustments happening every second to maintain the perfect pH balance and temperature to ensure you LIVE (read Eating ALIVE by Dr. John Matsen). Think about a HOT TUB or a pond and what you have to do to keep it clear, pH balanced and the correct temperature. ( to see a video on what I’m talking about please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3GPZOJ69-0 )

So… how does this connect to Darwin’s “Survival of the Fittest” analogy? …. well, as you know, WE ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. We may have all the same stuff (the majority of people do anyways) but just as no two snowflakes are alike in nature; so too are we on both the outside and the inside. We all have different Strengths and Weaknesses, and our weakest link (organ or system) will ultimately lose out in the survival race.

As the body tries to LIVE, it is constantly trying to balance, pulling nutrients and everything it needs to survive from everything it has to use. If we don’t provide our body what it needs through our food, water, air, emotions and experiences, then it will have to SURVIVE by using what it has on the INSIDE. Pulling from the valuable resources and funneling the toxic waste it can’t deflect into the weak links that cannot protect themselves…. the weak link of that individual will ultimately become injured, falter and die, resulting in hospital visits, medications and at the end….. organ surgeries, removals or replacements…. unless they take action!

What are the signals? Here are a few to look for….

  • Skin – General – most irritations, like eczema are related to immune system weakness
  • Skin – Face, Hands and Feet – Check out Ancient Chinese Medicine: http://www.eruptingmind.com/chinese-face-map/
  • Digestive & Urinary – Poop & Pee consistency, colour and odor… See the Bristol Stool Chart * You want to be a 4 or 5!  BristolStoolChart
  • Mind – are you focussed?, fussy?, tired?… look to your gut to fix it!… specifically bacteria. Dr Bernard Jensen speaks of the “synergistic relationship between the Mind and the Gut” in his book “Tissue Cleansing through bowel management”
  • Body Fat – David Wolfe explains here: http://www.davidwolfe.com/getting-fat-fix-it/
  • Emotions – depressed, anxious, happy, sad? This can be related to immune weakness and digestive and liver accumulation of toxins.
  • Nails – do you have ridges, are they brittle? http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/ss/slideshow-nails-and-health
  • Eyes – Are they clear? have a haze around them? Blood shot? Scroll down for Devin’s information on Iridology or check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTivAZ-WVtM
  • Sleep – Lack of or interrupted? Linked to digestive weakness, nutrient deficiencies and mind weaknesses.
  • Painhttp://www.cforcestudio.com/resources/emotional-pain-chart
  • Hair – Thinning, Changes? Can be a sign of circulation/cardio weakness and digestive buildup and nutrition deficiency.

What to do…. The Hippo Way…

Step 1: Take your FOCUS off of the physical and reach to the mind and nature to begin your balancing, then once you reach an emotionally positive place, begin working on the physical through positive health choices and suggestions as found throughout these 7 blogs and many others that are available or from a practitioner.

Step 2:  Focus on your Body’s wellness by starting with 2 things:

A.  Build your body with AMAZING Nutrition    &    B.  Assisting your body’s natural CHANNELS OF ELIMINATION

A.   Assisting your body’s natural CHANNELS OF ELIMINATION: Ensuring that our channels of elimination are open and working properly is critical for easy balancing. Eliminating the toxic “goo or scum” (think bathtub ring, hot tub foam or clogged tail pipe of a car) that accumulates from the stresses of our days…. Your channels are :

  1. Energy Centres
  2. Mind
  3. Bowel
  4. Skin
  5. Lungs
  6. Kidneys
  7. Lymphatic System
  8. Blood
  9. Liver
  10. Reproductive channels
  11. Tears/Voice/Emotions

Each Channel can be supported in many ways. Some of my favourite support strategies include:

  1. Herbs like Cascara Segrada, Turmeric, Garlic & Ginger, Dandelion

  2. Superfruits like Noni and Acai

  3. Yoga & Daily Meditation

  4. Exercise

  5. Allowing emotions to Flow….

  6. Skin Brushing

  7. Daily Cleansing with more focus for 10 days a month

  8. Alkaline Water… 3 x 20 oz per day

  9. Probiotics (Billions of them)

  10. Sexual activity… orgasms and human touch are very therapeutic

  11. Living in the moment, no judgement, pure appreciation

  12. eliminating as many chemicals s possible

  13. Fresh, real, natural, Non GMO, Organic Food

  14. Food elimination weeks: Limit the following in rotating weeks: a. Dairy, b. Wheat, c. Sugar, d. Alcohol

  15. Have a TALL glass of Hot water and Lemon in the Morning on an empty stomach.

B . Build your body with AMAZING Nutrition! Flood your body with more than it needs. Be SMART STRATEGIC and consult a Genesis Pure leafprofessional Nutritionist if you don’t know where to go. Supplements are a great add to your lifestyle for ease and peace of mind; liquid is best :)

“Happiness is the key to life my friends… Live in it to your fullest and participate with everything you have. Live in the NOW… the past will slow you down as much as worrying too much about the future. LIFE is happening all around you, embrace it, play, have fun and know that EVERYTHING you think and feel is a choice for health or for illness. Help your body LIVE the LIFE it wants, the LIFE you want. It’s right here waiting for you, RIGHT NOW.”

Hugs, Rebecca

Using Crystals To Balance….. the Hippocampus Mind, Hippocrates Body, Hippopotamus Nature/Spirit

crystalhealing-989x1024

For anyone not yet familiar with crystals and their healing properties you are in for a big treat! Crystals have been adorned and treasured since time began, their shiny reflections of purity and colour have mesmerized our ancestors to this generation no doubt for millennia to come! However some people are still unaware of how crystals have been used in history for healing and continue to be a source of monumental balance and healing for every dimension of your awareness, Mind, Body and Spirit.

To begin I must sit you back into your grade school science classes, where we learned that everything is made up of molecules and atoms. These Molecules vibrate at a rate unique to the DNA of what it is that it is part of. For instance the harder the object, like rock or steel, the slower the molecules are vibrating, the softer the object like skin, or our organs the molecules are faster, and of course the fastest molecules make up oxygen, gravity, and thoughts. So when we look at crystals they have a solid state, however they have under gone a form of Alchemy, similar to the transformation a piece of coal must endure to become a diamond.

cave crystal2     cave crystal    crystal header

Each crystal must have it’s special recipe or minerals, heat and pressure circumstances to create these beautiful gems. So in their unique alchemic physical form transformations they actually have highly programed molecular frequencies. Even though they are hard physically, their molecular vibration is actually not slow but are actually dictated by the special DNA Alchemic recipe they have under gone. If a crystal is observed under a powerful microscope the ‘DNA Pattern’ would be a uniquely repetitive pattern found only in that individual family of crystal. In other words, a Rose Quartz crystal you have in your hand would be an exact match of DNA patterning observed as every other Rose Quartz in the world. This is what makes the Rose Quartz what it is, after the custom DNA Recipe has done its alchemic Magic, turning simple sand, lava, pressure and heat into the glimmering crystal we know and (pun intended) Love, as Rose Quartz balances the Heart Chakra. Whoa slow down you say, no worries I will explain! As the Rose Quartz has this unique reality so too does every crystal. They all are hard in physical form but the frequency they give off varies depending on the DNA recipe that makes them the crystal they are. So Mother Earth has made through her amazing Alchemic Magic a natural Pharmacy of Crystals that vibrate at a frequency that matches things that are faster in vibration from physical form to vapor, and beyond! For simplicity sake I will assume everyone knows what Chakras are. The spinning energy filter wheels located at these areas of the body:

Chakrachart bsic

These filters have a very important job to do but they need our help. Since EVERYTHING is vibrating, everything then has a frequency, so more positive than others. Our bodies need a built in filtration system for prevention of negative frequency saturation. So these filters work day and night filtering out what we don’t want and letting in what we do want. As I am a Hair Stylist I find this analogy the easiest for most people to understand. If you let the air filter of your hair dryer fill up with dust and fluff, what would happen to your hair dryer? It would burn out the motor would heat up and break down. Here in lies the root of illness. Our bodies MUST have a clean ‘air’ or energy flow to feed every part of us healthy energy. Without this our bodies in the ‘Clogged’ location dries up like uncovered lettuce in a fridge! The even more important thing to remember is that each chakra is responsible for impacting our mental, emotional and physical state at EVERY location they are in. So if we go back and visit the Heart Chakra, our mental awareness at this point is harmonic relationships and peaceful loving thought, emotionally we love our selves and others unconditionally and we have healthy lungs, breasts, ribs etc. IF our Heart Chakra is not clean and clear (Hair Dryer Air Filter Clog) allowing healthy energy in and preventing negative from getting in, we could become cut off from others, not trusting or loving anyone, and feeling like we are unlovable, dissolving relationships. This could lead to physical health problems in the lungs, breast etc. If tested at this moment the vibrational frequency of the Heart Chakra would be out of balance and not reflective of the vibration rate of a healthy Heart Chakra. Interestingly the optimal frequency of the Heart Chakra is matched with the Frequency a Rose Quartz Crystal emits. When the Crystal is set on the Heart Chakra the consistent frequency of the crystal actual ‘Tunes’ the Heart Chakra like tuning a piano, this acts like a shedding effect of the “Interrupting” frequencies of all the piled up negative energy that no longer serves that has gotten caught up in the Chakra Filter from negative experiences, thoughts environments foods, ETC. Shown here are crystals matching each of the chakras:

crystal chakra chart

Luckily Crystals range in prices and are mainly quite affordable, not to mention beautiful adorning your home. Used in many ways to balance energy in the home and the body, for protection and balancing. Shown here is a simple Chakra Crystal layout you can do for yourself. Laying the associated crystal to each chakra while lying down in a relaxed state for 15- 30 mins starting with shorter session then extending as you become used to the ‘Tuning’ affects. For centuries crystals have adorned jewellery, breast plates, swords and staffs, we now can understand them more fully with the support of scientific tools to prove the healthy affects.

healing crystal back

Shown here is a more complex layout executed by a trained Crystal Therapist. Layouts are no less effect when simply done however as we begin to take more and more response-ability for our Self Care and in turn our impact on our planet, we begin to delve deeper into the more complex healing potential of this gorgeous treasure Mother Earth has supplied.

therapy

I use crystals ALL OF THE TIME! If I have a headache I use Clear Quartz with a point and set it on my forehead facing away and picture negative energy being drawn out through the point and back into Mother Earth for her use and purification. This can be done with any pain including tummy aches, setting the blunt end on the body at the site of pain then facing the point away drawing out the discomfort. It is important to know how to use crystals so getting your hands on the first edition of the ‘Crystal Bible’ available at Chapters is a great idea! You can look up any ailment in the back glossary area and find a crystal or a few that could be potential options for you. I use Selenite for back pain as it vibrates at the frequency the spine should at optimal health, but it is water soluble so it cannot be submersed in water. Sometimes you can wear a crystal for an entire day of relief other times simply a few moments is enough. Many Crystals also can aid in practices like meditation and mindfulness! Either way the positive side effects are boundless! They use their consistent unshakeable positive frequencies and recalibrate whatever in you that is out of balance, bringing it to a state of peace and comfort again! Some crystal need to be cleared of any negative energy you might inadvertently give it through a self healing sessions. Most crystals should be cleared after use by either washing in water, submerging in dirt, salt or rice or setting on your window sill for sun and moon clearing. Some crystals clear other crystals too! I put clear quartz, blue lace agate, and amethyst in a travel cup of water if I have a cold and it helps ease the side effects of typical Flu and cold symptoms. Crystals enhance and work well with Essential oils for healing as well!

So not only are these gems beautiful, rare and delightfully intriguing, they offer a multitude of affordable and attainable healing options. Thank You Mother Earth!

What’s Your Dosha?

Tune In To Your Natural Rhythms with Ayurveda

Ayurveda, known as the “science of life and longevity”, is a traditional system of natural healing that has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years. It provides us with the tools for living a life of balance; through nutrition, herbs, adequate lifestyle, right thinking, seasonal detoxification, along with the practice of Yoga and meditation.

Ayurveda works with the individual. By discovering your unique mind-body constitution, or doshic balance, you will be presented with a set of guidelines that will allow you to begin your journey to balanced, conscious living.

The Elements:

Ayurveda describes the entire physical world in terms of five elements: Air, Ether, Fire, Water, and Earth. Each element has their own particular qualities:

Air: dry, cold, rough, and full of motion

Ether: vast, cold, light, and clear

Fire: hot, subtle, mobile, dry, and sharp

Water: cold, mobile, heavy, soft, and liquid

Earth: cold, heavy, solid, stable, and dry

These five elements clearly manifest individually in the natural world, but they also all exist at all times in all things – including the body – and each has its particular role to play.

The Doshas:

According to Ayurveda there are three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. We are all born with our own unique combination of these three energies, with one or two predominating. This is known as our prakriti. Determining your prakriti requires an assessment of your most natural state. Consider your physical structure, as well as your mental and emotional tendencies.

Vata characteristics:

Vata is comprised of the elements Air and Ether. Vata is dry, cold, light, mobile, rough, subtle and clear. Vata regulates the principal of movement.

A Vata predominant person usually displays the following traits:

Physique: A light, trim build, often delicate in nature. The features (facial, fingers, limbs) are long, slim or narrow. Hair is thin, wiry, or curly.

Digestion: The appetite and digestion are variable, going up and down, yet often lean more towards “eating like a bird” and constipation.

Personality: A Vata person tends to be creative, thinks abstractly, and often has rapid speech with a thin, raspy, high-pitched or crackly voice. Vata predominant people are also prone to fear and anxiety, and have trouble focusing on one thing at a time.

Pitta characteristics:

Pitta is comprised of the elements Fire and Water. Pitta is sharp, penetrating, hot, liquid, mobile, and oily. Pitta regulates the principal of transformation.

A Pitta predominant person usually displays the following traits:

Physique: A medium build with average height and weight. The features can be sharp and fiery, precise and well-defined.

Digestion: A ferocious appetite and strong digestion.

Personality: A Pitta nature makes one passionate, an initiator, directed and focused. Pittas can also be easily irritated, fussy, angry, judgemental, and critical.

Kapha characteristics:

Kapha is comprised of the elements Earth and Water. Kapha is heavy, cold, dull, oily, smooth, dense, soft, static, liquid, cloudy, and hard. Kapha regulates the principal of stability and structure.

A Kapha predominant person usually displays the following traits:

Physique: A large, stout frame, features are rounder, larger, thicker, and often smoother than those of Vata or Pitta.

Digestion: Appetite is consistent and regulated but metabolism is slow, so may gain weight more readily and have difficulty losing it.

Personality: Kaphas are “down to earth”; grounded, stable, patient, compassionate and nurturing. They have a strong memory and firm beliefs. This may make them prone to inflexibility, possessiveness, jealousy, hesitant towards change, and inertia.

What is your constitution? Your Pakriti?

What are your qualities and tendencies – physically, mentally, emotionally? Do you have a predominance of one of these doshas? Or can you see yourself in all three?

You can take an online quiz to help determine your prakriti. Try this one from Joyful Belly:

http://www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/assessment/Dosha?gclid=Cj0KEQiAzai0BRCs2Yydo8yptuIBEiQAN3_lFvMPFNWefj9iW8WNcOqY29f6To_Zk7BDRbJ9Tl0fSfIaAi6N8P8HAQ

Once you have an understanding of your prakriti, you’ll be able to discover your vikriti – your current state of imbalance. Utilizing the tools mentioned earlier, you will be able to re-establish the natural state of balance between Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

The more you observe the subtle qualities in your body, the more flexibility you’ll have in your day to day choices. We are continually changing and renewing, and the body’s capacity to regenerate itself is what allows healing to happen. By tuning in and feeling what is happening inside your body on a daily basis, you can make changes to your diet and lifestyle to encourage your own unique state of balance.

Healing Winter Foods

As Hippocrates said, “Let food by thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food” (460-377 B.C.). Hippocrates clearly understood the power of food. Thousands of years later, here we are almost completely disconnected from what we are putting into our mouths. As a society, we need to rebuild our understanding of food and how it affects our body, mind and soul.

You have likely heard the phrase “you are what you eat.” What this phrase depicts is the fact that the food you eat becomes your cells, your tissue, your bones, your organs. Your food becomes YOU! The quality of the food you put into your body is the quality of performance your body will have.

While the body needs all the different nutrients it receives from your food, there are certain “key” elements missing from the average American diet that are contributing to the overpopulation of sickness and disease. Below is a list of key elements and the foods that contain them that can significantly improve your overall health and well-being.

Antioxidants (vitamins A, C and E; flavonoids and polyphenols (like grape skin and seed); lycopene; lutein; lignin; selenium; coQ10 and glutathione) – Help protect your blood cells from damage.

Healing Winter Foods: Apples, berries, citrus, red grapes, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, tomato, garlic, ginger, nuts, whole grains, tea and dark chocolate.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Help prevent against cardiovascular disease, improves brain function and is an essential element for cell-to-cell communication, which can control whether or not you get sick.

Healing Winter Foods: Fish (like salmon), nuts, seeds, soy beans, tofu and some vegetables to a lesser degree like Brussels sprouts, collard greens, green beans, kale, romaine, spinach, strawberries, turnip greens and winter squash.

Fiber – Helps prevent against cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, digestive disorders, gallstones and kidney stones

Healing Winter Foods: Apples, artichoke, avocados, bananas, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, corn, dates, figs, mung beans, nuts, peas, sweet potatoes, turnip greens, whole grains

OTHER KEY ELEMENTS:

Magnesium – Helps stabilize heart rhythm and blood pressure and flow; maintains proper muscle function (relaxing); improves calcium absorption and insulin response; reduces anxiety, depression, fatigue, hyperactivity and aggression; relieves back pain, headaches and constipation; decreases asthma symptoms and more!

Winter Foods: Artichokes, bananas, beans (best in spring and summer), broccoli, figs, fish (Halibut and Tuna), nuts, prunes, pumpkin (seeds best), sweet potatoes and whole grains

Vitamin DHelps prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s, increases utilization of calcium, reduces inflammation, boosts immune system, helps with insulin secretion and regulates blood pressure.

The BEST way to get vitamin D is 20-30 minutes of sun exposure every day!

Winter Foods: Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, sardines), beef, liver, eggs. You can also eat “fortified” foods; but it is not the same as consuming pure vitamin D or getting sunshine.

Other Helpful Winter Foods:

  • Garlic is antiviral and antibacterial

  • Ginger and peppermint help eliminate digestive issues

  • Lemon helps detoxify and purify the body

  • Cherries are natural pain relievers

  • Pineapples and ginger are naturally anti-inflammatory

Consuming these “healing foods” on a regular basis can significantly improve your health and overall quality of life. They are delicious and nutritious, and should be a staple in every home during the winter months. Enjoy!

Christine Cumming Prana Life Yoga Instructor Founder – Pure Potential Yoga Certified Child &Youth Worker

Yoga – Practicing to support your Mind, Body & Spirit, my personal journey

Yoga is about matching breath to movement, it is the union of oppositions, and it is a practice. Isn’t that cool? A practice. No expected end result. No comparison to anyone else. No right or wrong. It is simply a practice.  Each individuals’ practice is unique to them, their ability and their body starting from where they are at the moment they step onto their mat and moving forward from there. ‎And, in my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful tools anyone can have to support themselves – mind, body and spirit.

Instead of sharing textbook information on yoga with you,  I will share my story and how yoga has changed my life which has in turn led me to teach yoga in a way that will hopefully guide others on their own incredible journeys.

A few years ago I was in a very uncomfortable place in my life. I was riding on the coat tails of having made some very big life changes and I was searching for something to help with anxiety and weight loss.    I decided to go to a yoga class with a friend as I had done many times before. I always felt good at the end of it but this time it spoke to my soul. Something within that class inspired me to start practicing regularly and it became more than just an exercise I was capable of doing. It became a way of life as I noticed changes.  What I was practicing on my mat was reflecting outward into my life off of my mat.

Mind/Hippocampus

Initially I started to notice that I was becoming more accepting of myself and my abilities. I began to notice the inner critic and the negative self talk. Once I was aware, I was able to quiet those unhelpful voices and make changes accordingly. I found that I became more accepting of myself in the moment and was developing compassion towards myself.   Yoga was teaching me focus and concentration (which felt like a miracle! I have a very busy brain that feels like it is constantly going). When in an arm balance like crow or standing on one leg in tree, the mind needs to be in the moment, intensely focused on your body and each micro movement occurring within it. If the mind starts to wander to the grocery list or work, the body follows suit by wandering out of the pose which is where the body loses balance and loses the integrity of the Asana (posture). Because of this learned focus and the training of the mind to be in the moment, it is an incredible tool for supporting mental health. Like I mentioned earlier, I was looking for something to help with anxiety and I had found it. Study after study supports the benefits yoga has on mental health, especially when it comes to anxiety and depression. ‎http://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/yoga-for-anxiety-and-depression
I also began to notice a really cool correlation to how I would tackle challenges on my mat and how I was facing challenges in real life. Yoga was teaching me resilience. I was learning to balance my life, accepting things as they were in the moment and working to create change where I could, while letting go of the things I could not control.

Body/Hippocrates

On a physical level, I was getting stronger. I was learning to connect with how my body worked and to gain an appreciation for what it was truly capable of doing. Instead of just standing in a pose, I learned how to truly engage in it while finding the strength and ease in each asana.  (Sthira Sukham Asanam https://yogainternational.com/article/view/sthira-and-sukha-steadiness-and-ease )     I found myself practicing and being able to do more each time… building into arm balances and learning that I was capable of supporting myself. And, if I happened to fall, I could just get back up and try again.  It also taught me to give my body permission to relax. Transferring this off of the mat seemed to come easily. I began to feel stronger and trust in myself, my views and my choices. The physical strength I was building was supporting an inner strength I had forgotten was in there. I began to engage more in my life and best of all, when challenges came my way, I no longer melted into a giant puddle. I found myself standing strong, facing the challenges, and working through them. ‎

Nature/Hippo

The first thing we do in yoga is to connect to our breath. Breathing is the most natural, innate thing we do and most of us (Yup, I was guilty of it!) pay absolutely no attention to our breath or how it is affected by what we are doing or how we are moving.  By learning to connect to my breath, I began to connect to the moment, to myself, to my practice and to the world around me.
Couple the breath with so many nature inspired poses, we have a practice fit for the HIPPO Way! Vriksasana (Tree pose) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wdln9qWYloU has us rooting our standing foot into the ground while growing, stretching and balancing while Bakasana (Crow pose) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eXLWMHANqlw has us balancing, challenging our beliefs around what we are capable of, and ultimately having faith and trusting in ourselves. ‎

One of the most beautiful things about yoga is that it helps you connect to the inner workings of yourself, gently showing you where you struggle while lovingly supporting you in becoming a stronger, more engaged, focused, resilient and compassionate version of yourself. This is why I teach. This is what I love.

A little bit about me….

Hi! My name is Christine Cumming and I am a Child & Youth Worker (CYC cert), a Pranalife Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT-200hr) and a Registered Reiki Practitioner (RP-CRA). Up until I came to Waterloo 8 years ago, I had spent most of my life in rural Ontario interrupted only by a couple of years in the Yukon.  ‎I am blessed to be a mom of two incredible teenage boys, to have a loving partner (who also has incredible teenagers) and to do work every day that I love (which never feels like work) .
At present, I teach two levels of yoga at PanHealth in Waterloo with new classes starting Jan 4 and 7, 2016. The  Slow-Flow class is designed for seniors and bodies who haven’t moved in a really long time while the Ashtanga inspired Flow class is designed for everyone.
I’m also looking forward to teaching Halo-Yoga in the salt cave at The RockSpa http://therockspa.com/workshop-events/#modal-iframein  and kicking the new year off with a Meditation and Manifestation workshop there as well. http://therockspa.com/workshop-events/#modal-iframe

Wishing you all of the peace, happiness, health and love the new year can bring

XO, Christine

Windows to the Soul

The eyes are the windows to the soul. This phrase could not be any more true, when it comes to Iridology. Iridology is the study and practice of observing and analyzing the unique topographical presentation of the eyes, to provide insight into the internal workings of the human body. Iridology is an assessment tool that we can use to help guide individuals to optimal health through understanding how their body works and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Body

Iridology shows us our body constitution; genetic inheritance; organ strengths and weaknesses; the types of foods we best tolerate; the function of various body systems, like the digestive system; and more. When body systems are out of balance, we can experience physical symptoms. Natural methods, like nutrition and lifestyle modification, can be used to restore balance, and improve function. The iris has been mapped into various zones that correspond with specific organs or body systems. Iridology can help us identify issues before they manifest as problems.

Mind

How we view the world is a direct reflection of how we view ourselves, as well as how our internal environment operates. Our emotional tendencies are related to the functional level of our organs. For example, if one suffers from diabetes, a common feeling experienced is a lack of sweetness in life or even bitterness. Iridology helps us determine our emotional tendencies, psychological traits and the corresponding organs, and can even show us how we may cope with stress. When we become aware of our emotional tendencies, we are able to adjust them accordingly with time and practice.

Nature

flowers natural Dependency on medications; treating symptoms versus treating the whole patient; consuming more processed and refined foods than natural ones; reliance on vehicles instead of taking the bus or walking. These are but a few examples of society becoming distant with nature, for the sake of convenience at the expense of our well-being.

The further we move from nature, the closer we are to illness

Nature provides us with eyes to observe our external environment, but also to look inwardly on ourselves and others; to take preventative action in our own health; and to realize that our own healing comes from ourselves, and ultimately, from nature.

Simple Steps

  1. Give yourself permission to change! This is one of the first steps to take on your healing path. Allow yourself to be open to new ideas and perspectives. How can you heal, if you aren’t ready and open to do so?
  2. Drink 8 glasses of fresh, clean water daily. Consider adding about an ounce or two of lemon juice to your water every morning; this will help balance the pH of the water and add a small amount of trace minerals.
  3. Get outside! Spend at least 30 minutes per day going for a walk, jogging, cycling or even shoveling some snow! You will be amazed at how different you feel with some extra sunlight (vitamin D). If you are sensitive to depression or anxiety, you may wish to supplement with 5,000 to 10,000 IU per day of vitamin D during the winter, and dropping that back down to about 2,000 to 3,000 IU per day for the rest of the year. The importance of this vitamin cannot be emphasized enough; more and more research demonstrates this fact.

Erin Kiers Hybrid Hair & Detox Spa Institute for Harmonious Living

Honoring the ‘Thriving Three Hippo’s’ Mind, Body and Nature/Spirit: an insight into Frequency

As a regular Blogger on my own two sites, Hybrid Hair and Detox Spa, KW’s First Eco Friendly Salon, Spa and Energy Space; and The Institute For Harmonious Living, promoting Holistic Life Coaching, Energy Psychology Private, Couples and Group sessions and certification programs, I was honored to be asked to share some insight on The Mind, Body, Nature/Spirit connection.

We are all called here for a purpose.  It is essential we follow our intuition through life so we can live up to our full potential.  Many sadly find themselves so lost, so overwhelmed, so discouraged and distracted that they are not even sure which way is up let alone how to find their purpose and passion.  Sometimes we trip over the unavoidable reality that pushes us forward.  But the Art of Life comes from hearing also the whispers.  The subtle influences that drift lightly around us.  So the question you may ask is how?  How do we hear that sweet guiding voice?

By Honoring, Protecting, and Nurturing Your Hippocampus Mind, Hippocrates Body, Hippopotamus Nature/Spirit

Hippocampus Mind:  You are gifted with two powerful computers, the Conscious and Subconscious Minds.  The Conscious mind is the learner, the observer, the undistracted focus, If of course you train it properly.  Without the Conscious mind you would not have learned to walk, talk, tie your shoe or drive a car.  It is however quite lazy once you ‘Download’ everything you ‘Think’ is pertinent.  It gets distracted with mind games, like worrying about the future, the past, the size of your nose, whether or not He/She likes you.  Leaving the Subconscious Mind to do all the Grunt work.  The Conscious mind has done such repetitious training that it ‘Programs’ the Subconscious with all it needs to ‘Function’ and ‘React’ to daily mundane activities.  And so begins the drama…

The Subconscious Mind is initially a blank slate at birth, it is pristine with potential. Then parents, siblings, environment, teachers all get in the way.  In a desperate effort to download all pertinent information to function in this world the power downloader which is the Subconscious mind extracts every single thing that it believes it needs to function in the world, mentally, physically and emotionally.  Once you reach the age of 6-8 years old, it is full.  There is no more downloading for main functions and there is no deleting.  Or so it would seem.  So then we begin the process of functioning through the experience of a 0-8 year old, while our conscious mind lazily distracts itself with nonsense.  So we react from childhood experiences, we stumble through life from the mind space of a child, and the conscious mind keeps busy elsewhere so it is not a mindful chaperone to the subconscious! Unless you train it!

Hippocrates Body:  “They wouldn’t sell it as food/moisturizer/cleaner/housewares if it weren’t safe. Someone out there is regulating this stuff”.  I used to think this way.  And like finding out there is no Tooth Fairy or Santa Clause I became educated.  No one else will mindfully sustain your body or your environment but YOU.  If you do not act as your own advocate, no one else will.  It is essential that the highest quality sustenance be ingested into your temple.  It is essential that you be aware of the impact you have on your physical surrounding what your physical surroundings have on you.  It is essential that every effort be made to strengthen and tone the body for an increased ability to repel illness and injury.  In order for the human body to stay optimal the ingestion and absorption of positive nutrients should out way the negative as this is the fuel that your cells use to regenerate, hence the saying ’You are what you eat’.  We must be cognisant of this for ourselves, No one else will.  Recognize services/retail providers and practitioners that reflect your views on honoring your body and respect the environment, we all must stick together.

Frequency

As both the Hippocampus Mind, and Hippocrates Body, are both lower frequency and denser then Hippopotamus Nature/Spirit, it stands to reason that their activities and properties for sustainability would be denser and lower frequency.

What I mean by this is easily understood by observing an ice cube. The solid mass, like the body has molecules vibrating at a slow frequency, making the form they create denser and heavier.  As the Ice Cube melts the molecules are vibrating at a faster rate, creating a reality something like the mind, more fluid and moving faster than the body.  As the water is transformed into steam the molecules are vibrating at a far faster rate altering its form into a vapor more comparable to spirit.  The Steam becomes one with everything around it, it becomes the oxygen, the gravity, all the things we take for gratitude and know are their but that we cannot see.  Even though these divided realities have different functions they are indeed connected.  Without the ice cube, there would be no water, without the water there would be no steam, and is also true in the reverse.  However each element needs something different to be optimally functioning.  As The Body needs high vibrating foods and exercise to stay highly functional, the mind needs training with efforts to remove distraction from the thoughts and refocus on the moment, the spirit too needs nurturing and honoring.

Honoring the ‘Thriving Three Hippo’s’ Mind, Body and Spirit

Living in the moment is key to a healthy mind and spirit, it also prevents injury to the body. When we live too far into the future or two far into the past with a lazy mind, we create fear, depression, anxiety, and many more other negative emotions.  The spirit is then reduced in optimal frequency and diminished in motivation to heal self and the world around us, therefore depleting the high energy needed to plan healthy meals and exercise. Meditation is like Brain Personal Training, it strengthens the muscle of the mind to stay clear of clutter.  It also reduces stress, removing the negative side effects of flight or flight that we create for ourselves with thinking anywhere other than the moment.  The reduced stress and lowered blood pressure allows the organs of the body to properly function, optimally doing their jobs in sync with all other parts to create a powerful temple.

Exercise and repeated affirmations are active forms of mindfulness and meditation that assist with mutually benefiting mind body and spirit. As we prioritize ourselves our spirit trusts us more deeply and it begins to open up and flower more beautifully, knowing you are there to protect and nurture that sacred part of you.  There are active and passive ways to nurture and show yourself self-care.

Active Healing is focused effort practices like meditation, holistic life coaching, exercise, bathing etc. Passive Healing activities are equally as essential if not more so.  There are MANY talented Alternative Health Practitioners out there that have an abundance of knowledge and experience to provide you with Energetic and more Physical care services to help you release negative energy locked and stored in your body that can only be released when you are in a completely relaxed passive state.  Massage, Manicures, Pedicure. Facials, Reiki, Electromagnetic Therapy, Body Talk, Crystal Grid Healing, and Hypnosis are just to name a few.  The body is allowed to fully relax offering space for the alternative care practitioner to draw out negative energy blocks, or simply encourage to leave the host. As you heal the body and mind the spirit blossoms and vibrates at a higher frequency emitting bands of energy out and around your body. This energy impacts directly all of those around you.  And so Healing Yourself Heals the world, as you impact the vibration of all you encounter and by living by example and allowing your energy to inspire others to heighten their own, it begins an epidemic of immeasurable proportions.

As this beautiful energy spreads it reaches farther and farther encompassing the entire planet as we make clearer and clearer conscious choices to love and protect each other and our planet more consciously. Of course by clearing all obstructions of negative energy in and around our bodies to the message, our sweet whisper of guidance finds no resistance in our energy pattern around our bodies, and finds its rightful home in your intuition, incubating in the perfectly rich soil of our fertile minds to create the life of our dreams.

Erin’s Journey

A little background on where Erin’s journey began, in her own words …… “I was raised on a farm and taught to honour and respect the Earth. Every waking moment I could spend I would spend it with Mother Nature.  My childhood was filled with outdoors appreciation and awareness.  When I became a Cosmetologist, offering all services from skin care, and hair care including barbering, I became acutely aware of how the chemicals I had to work with made me feel.  I had trouble breathing and the skin on my hands were regularly dry, cracked and bleeding.  When I had the opportunity I opened Hybrid Hair And Detox Spa, KW’s First Eco Friendly Salon and Spa, recognizing that someone had to do something about the undeniable negative affect the Multi-Billion Dollar Beauty Care Industry was having on our environment and our bodies, and it looked like it would have to be me”…. this story will expand in future blogs! Stay tuned!

The Mind-Body Connection and Sexual Fulfillment

Sexual intimacy provides a host of physiological and psychological benefits. Sex is the anti-aging, immune-boosting, stress-reducing, pain-relieving, mood enhancing and hormone-balancing secret weapon! However, many struggle with low desire and/or miss out on enjoying sex fully.

There is a unique connection between our brains and bodies when it comes to sex, each having its own impact on how sexual encounters go. Our brains have the power to control our body’s sexual response when we fantasize, look at pictures, explore erotica or think about someone touching us. It is perfectly healthy to become aroused in these situations and, when appropriate, to act on the signals being sent from the mind to the body.

The unique mind-body connection works the other way around, too, even when we do not necessarily want it to. Our brains are quite possibly the most powerful sex organ we have, as they are capable of hindering the way our bodies respond to sexual arousal. This is especially common when our thoughts are clouded by stress, guilt, fear, anxiety, sadness, anger and shame.

It is common to have a difficult time getting aroused and/or maintaining an erection and vaginal lubrication if a person is lost in their thoughts, making it very hard to fully enjoy sexual intimacy. Unfortunately this also means that there’s a good chance it will be difficult, if not impossible, to have an orgasm. However, it does not have to be this way when one is ready and willing to harness the mind-body connection.

What does all this talk of a mind-body connection mean, though? It means that our brain and our body have to work together when wanting more out of sex! This is accomplished when we feel good mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.

How does one develop a solid mind-body connection in order to have a fulfilling sex life?

Self love, connecting with nature and enhancing emotional intelligence are key ingredient’s in a fulfilling sex life. We already know that our brains rule our bodies, so it makes sense that a healthy self-image and emotional intelligence are a one-way ticket to get on the great sex train.

Self Love

When overflowing with health, positivity, and confidence, one can embark on a truly rewarding sexual journey. In order to be in touch with the body’s full capacity for pleasure, it is important to free oneself mentally and emotionally. Embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth, setting healthy boundaries, practicing forgiveness, unplugging from the negative and focusing on overall health are all forms of self-love and self-acceptance, and self-esteem is built through practicing self-love.

It is also important for individuals to take care of and get to know their own body, how it works and feels, and to give it the physical attention that it needs and deserves.

Creating time and space for things that relax the mind and arouse the body should be a priority, whether it is a long shower, dancing, or vigorous exercise. We should be showing ourselves love and affection in some way, shape or form every day. Treating ourselves daily demonstrates that we value, appreciate and love ourselves. This could be a long bath, a massage or facial, extra time alone with a partner, psychotherapy, reading, yoga, listening to music, working out, or just about any self-care ritual.

Regular time spent alone provides the perfect opportunity to indulge in self-pleasure. People need to spend time regularly nourishing and arousing their own bodies, and less time waiting around for someone else to “do it” for them. Being familiar with ones own body, and knowing what feels good is valuable knowledge to bring to lovemaking, allowing for comfortable intimate experiences with another. Everyone deserves attention and pleasure, both from oneself as well as from a lover. Finding ways to open up to receive more intimate touch assists with informed, conscious touch, which is a master key in opening the door to sexual ecstasy.

Connecting with Nature

Nature also has much to teach us in ways of the human body and the subtle energy realms that operate deep within us. There is an entire world of sensuous beauty to enjoy and celebrate and people are intrinsically connected with nature. In our modern word we spend a lot of time inside our homes and offices, and most of us spend too little time in the great outdoors. We forget that underneath our clothes, we are instinctual creatures, naked and primitive in our essential nature.

Partners spending time outside together, allows for reconnection with their primal temperament. Space, fresh air, water, and weather can bring people closer to their true authentic selves. During a relaxed stroll, concerns or problems can be aired more easily, processed and worked through. Ultimately strengthening the relational bond.

Communing with another body while communing with nature is about as primal as one can get (in private outdoor space that is).

Emotional Intelligence

But…why is emotional intelligence part of the sexual ecstasy equation? Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and manage our emotions as well as the emotions of others. The skills that come along with this insight enable us to acknowledge emotions (whether they are our own or belong to someone else) and to use the emotions as a tool to solve problems or to help think of things from a different perspective.

How can emotional intelligence impact ones sex life? A higher emotional intelligence is typically coupled with a stellar set of communication skills that make it easier to express wants and needs out of sexual encounters as well as acknowledge the wants and needs of partner(s). Satisfying sex relies so much on understanding ones own needs as well as our partner(s). In fact, studies have found there to be a direct correlation between ones emotional intelligence, better sex and the ability to climax. Notice the mind-body connection here?

In other words, the difficulties individuals face when failing to enjoy sex and/or reach orgasm are usually caused by physiological issues. Instead, the trouble starts in the mind as a bi-product of the inability to vocalize what is working and what is not as well as the inability to express a desire to experiment and venture into new sexual territory. This communication block can stem from a variety of things, but most people attribute their unwillingness to speak up to embarrassment, guilt, and shame or out of fear of rejection and judgment. As a result, many find trouble getting and staying aroused during sex, which is commonly capped off with missing out on a fulfilling, passionate sexual experience.

For some, emotional intelligence comes innately, but for others not so much. It is something that can be developed and improved over time with a bit of work. Luckily most of the “work” can take place in the bed, shower, backyard, or even on the kitchen table since having an active sex life will contribute to emotional intelligence. The brain responds really well to the boost in oxytocin and oestrogen that occurs when getting frisky. The activity in the brain increases during sex more often and enhances emotional intelligence as a result.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to spend more time getting busy between the sheets as a way to work towards improving emotional intelligence while learning how to openly communicate desires. Ultimately being more in touch with oneself and partner(s), both emotionally and physically, lead to satisfying sex and enhanced health.

Enjoying sex fully involves cherishing and nourishing the mind, body and soul, while making the most out of time spent with partners.

It was wonderful sharing with you!  Thanks for reading!  Let us know your thoughts below.
